Niagara Falls, Canada: Graham Russell Sits Right down to Discuss The Future In addition to Air SupplyOn Saturday, 03 24th, I had a rare chance to sit down with Graham Russell to speak with him about his debut COMPACT DISC, The Future. Graham and I spoke concerning the Future, The Heart from the Rose and Air Provide. In addition, the interview was taped and will come in six parts at [http://www.airsupplyblog.com] as well as on YouTube at [http://www.YouTube.com/ASFanForLife]. Betsy: Thanks for allowing me to get this done. Graham: Oh you tend to be welcome. Betsy: I’ michael very excited. Graham: Oh yea good. Betsy: And Personally i think very privileged. Graham: Oh obviously, you’ re very encouraged. Betsy: Let me state congratulations. You have had as well as incredible career and I will only imagine that your lifetime has been as amazing. (Graham laughs)Betsy: You are actually into your fourth 10 years with Air Supply and also you don’ t seem exhausted. What’ s your solution? Graham: You know, truly the secret is looking following yourself. Not that I actually do it, but I attempt to. You know, and otherwise you simply can’ t keep the pace up using the traveling and everything. And I actually do my little workout daily. I have to, with regard to energy, and I get it done before I go upon stage too. Betsy: Truly? Graham: Yeah. Betsy: That’ s cool. Graham: Yeah I perform. Betsy: Ok, it’ utes been 31 years, correct, since you and Russell created Air Supply? Graham: Yes. Betsy: Why did you simply now decide to to produce debut solo…? Graham: Nicely, I’ ve always desired to do it. Plus I write lots of other songs, not simply Air Supply songs. I write lots of different kinds of songs too and also the songs that I’ ve documented, I don’ t believe are particularly Air Provide songs. Do you know the reason? And I wanted to complete it too. I imply, Russell did one within ‘ 86, and I truly wanted to do this. And I had lots of different songs that We thought would be good by myself CD and Russell really was very supportive of this. And it took me personally, I mean, I didn’ t just get it done. It took me some time to do it because Used to do it at different instances when we were off and when I could. I mean, Air Supply always comes first also it always will. But I wanted to get this done because it’ s another kind of music so that as everybody knows I love electronica and things like that. And there’ s a number of that on there as well... but it’ s awesome. I like that, various music. Betsy: When does it actually be out? Graham: It’ utes out now. Well, it arrived on the scene on the first day time of spring, which was intentional however it wasn’ t available after that. But it is right now. They were like each day behind. Betsy: I know that many people have ordered it already plus they already got a notice that says… Graham: Yes, they are backordered currently, I believe. Yeah, that’ utes good. Betsy: Oh, does which means that it’ s out associated with stock? Graham: It’ s from the original stock, yeah. Betsy: Oh yea, that’ s fantastic. Graham: It’ utes great. Betsy: I believed maybe it wasn’ capital t ready. Graham: Oh absolutely no, they’ ve already sold their initial shipment they got but I’ ll just provide them with some more now. Betsy: Oh yea that’ s fabulous. Graham: Yes, it is, it’ utes great. Betsy: Tell me concerning the title. Why is it called The near future? Graham: Because It is actually, its kind of my personal future and it’ s also the near future I saw when We was very young as well as I, like when We introduce, when I sing The near future live, when I introduce it like a song that, because The near future, the song, The Long term, is all about my personal dream and my vision after i was very young to become a songwriter and to maintain a band, which is the one thing I ever wanted to complete. And it’ s that vision which i always held and I usually kept and I just never forget about it. So that had been my future. It’ s certainly not my future now. It had been my future then after i began. And I accustomed to drive people crazy, you realize, all the teachers inside my school, ‘ cause they all wanted me to become a doctor or plumber or perhaps a dentist or something, and I simply wasn’ t interested. And I simply said, no, I’ m gonna maintain a band and a person don’ t have to be worried about me. And I just never release. I just held on to it constantly. Betsy: That is therefore cool. Graham: Yeah. You know, I’ m a large believer in that. I tell many people, a lot of more youthful people, I’ ll tell them if you would like something bad enough you’ ll have it. You gotta stick from it. There is a classic saying, I don’ t know where it originated from. It says, ‘ most are called but few tend to be chosen’. And many individuals are called to do particular things, but the world itself thins everyone away, you know, so there’ s a couple standing. And then, and people go forward, in any kind of profession, in any selected career. You get thinned out and also you get presented with barriers and explanations why you shouldn’ t get it done. And it’ s the ones that persevere. It’ s such as Darwin’ s Theory, you realize, it’ s the survival from the fittest. Somebody could came along and knocked me personally down. I mean, I'd plenty of people which knocked me down, but I simply kept getting up once again. It’ s like that… Terminator, the actual metal man, whatever he's called. He keeps getting out of bed, you know, and he then gets his head squashed within the press and he appears like a pancake and he then keeps getting up again and he returns you know. It’ utes that thought pattern. However I’ m really into that and In my opinion in that. Betsy: Well the planet is a better place due to it. Graham: Well I really hope so. I mean, I usually thought that, well, I always wanted to become a songwriter and I always wanted every single child leave something. I don’ t know basically have or not or even if Air Supply offers. I think so, some thing, but I think these songs make people feel better plus they leave a mark in it, I think. Betsy: Well I will guarantee they do. As well as I’ m sure you have to know that they perform. Graham: Well I believe they do. You understand, but it’ s not only the songs, its what we do like a band and hopefully it will be that way, that they leave an impact. Betsy: You know, I know you looked over my blog and among the pages I created is known as your stories. I don’ t know should you saw that or not really, but basically I just asked individuals to send in their stories… how Air Supply has affected them within their lives. So it’ s really actually cool because people have put several things that were significant, maybe they met you in a Meet & Greet and also you did something but they discuss how you’ ve influenced their lives. Graham: Oh yea really? Betsy: And you know my personal blog just started and I only likely have 10 stories or the like there but a few of the stories are really lengthy and are very unique. Graham: You know, We haven’ t read them but I'll. I mean, I’ ve got on the website but I kind associated with flipped through it. However I’ ll get on the website ‘ cause I’ d prefer to see how it will affect people. Betsy: You say that you simply write everyday. Graham: I actually do, yeah. Betsy: So was it hard to just put 11 songs about the CD? Graham: There’ utes only 10 actually. As well as I’ ll tell a person why. Because I’ m into numbers a bit. And 11 is always many ‘ cause I was created on the 11th associated with June. And 11 within numerology, you can’ capital t add it together. A person can’ t add 11 or even 22 together. They need to stay 22, where as though it was 13, it might become 4 and sixteen would become 7. However 11 stays 11, this doesn’ t become two, and 22 doesn’ capital t become 4. So from a spiritual perspective it’ s a good number. But the 11th tune didn’ t work personally, you know, when We was recording the 11th 1. It wouldn’ t arrive. It wouldn’ t sound the way in which I wanted it in order to sound and I attempted like six times, from different times. And it would be a very simple thing beside me and the guitar however it just didn’ t seem right. But When We played it, when I'd sit in a seat to play it, this sounded great. But after i tried to record this, it just didn’ t emerge the way I desired it And I kept obtaining a little frustrated with this. And I tried another song which wasn’ t right possibly. And so in the finish I said it’ utes gotta be 10. I quickly looked at Bob Dylan’ s recent album and he'd 10 songs on this. So I thought, oh, people are going to 10 songs. Because you choose albums up now as well as there’ s like 17 or 18 songs onto it. But most of them are often crap, you know. They’ lso are not… there’ s absolutely no value. And I’ m thinking why not really put 10 songs onto it instead of have 11 songs when one of these Isn’ t right. But I kept taking a look at the list of the actual songs, and they experienced right, you know, and also the sequence was right, as well as I thought, well, I’ m gonna opt for it. So I type of broke the cycle associated with 11. (At this stage, someone walked in the area and gave graham the bag that had a few vitamins, lip balm and pens inside it. Graham then showed me personally a bag of vitamins he takes. )Betsy: You take those vitamins before the display? Graham: Yeah. (Graham laughs)Betsy: Therefore that’ s where you've all the energy through? Graham: I think therefore. Probably. I hope therefore. Yeah. Betsy: You know I have a nickname for a person. Graham: What’ s which? Betsy: Tigger. Graham: Oh yea right, yeah! You understand, I don’ t know where that originated from, it just happened. It’ s only kind of happened within the last 3 or 4 many years. Betsy: Really? Graham: I believe so, yeah. Well you realize, I have so a lot energy from doing the actual show. I can’ t just stand there and... I mean some songs once they are mellow songs, I will, but I get so involved with it that I have to let some of the power go. Betsy: I adore itGraham: Oh I, guess what happens too? It’ s a great workout personally too and I anticipate that. Betsy: I’ m concerned for the knees! Graham: Oh, you realize, I actually wear the knee brace on my personal left knee now. Betsy: Truly? Graham: Yeah, I actually just place that on last night for the very first time in months. But, yes, I enjoy it simply because it’ s just allowing some steam off. But I like it, yeah. Betsy: Well I enjoy see the variety. Since you typically do it throughout the same songs. Graham: I actually do, yeah. Betsy: And I usually know when it’ s coming however sometimes you stop. Sometimes you stop and appear at Mike or… Graham: Ok last one? See I don’ t even realize that. Betsy: It’ s fun simply to see the variety. Graham: Oh yea really? Oh good, yes. Betsy: Well I’ michael sure it’ s just about all spontaneous. Graham: It is actually, yeah, but you’ lso are probably right, I do get it done in certain songs. There are specific songs that are such as triggers so if there’ utes a part… But We never think consciously, oh yea now I gotta leap or anything. I just get it done. Betsy: Well, it’ s if you find a certain beat and when you're able to certain points in the actual song. Graham: Yeah. Betsy: You realize, I’ ve been in order to, I don’ t understand, maybe 20 shows because the summer… Graham: You possess, yeah. Betsy: For me personally it’ s exciting as well as it’ s very, umm, foreseeable. Graham: Right. Betsy: You realize, so for me, the song list is relatively exactly the same, but I love to see things that are no longer foreseeable. Graham: Yeah. Betsy: You realize, the things that just show up, and I love which. Graham: Yeah, I perform too. I would prefer to do more of which, you know. Russell prefers to become not so predictable. Absolutely no, that’ s the wrong thing to express. He prefers to understand what’ s going upon. Yeah, he prefers to understand what’ s going upon. Where I’ d like to swap things up, but he gets just a little nervous when, if We start doing that as well much… which is reasonable enough. Betsy: Well I really like it. Graham: Oh awesome. Betsy: Now I need to apologize, but who is actually Stina? Graham: Stina is actually, she sang on Over the Concrete Sky. She’ s the lady singer on Shadow from the Sun. I don’ t know knowing that song. Betsy: Ok last one, I love it. Graham: Yes, I do too. Betsy: It’ utes beautiful. Graham: Yeah, I really like it. She sang upon that. And she sings upon my album too. She sings on I believe 3 tracks. She’ s an excellent singer. She’ s a good opera singer, and she’ utes 28, and she’ utes married. But she’ s got an excellent voice and I adore her voice. I do. And my songs are extremely suited for her. She writes her very own songs too and does everything, but for my tunes, her voice is excellent, you know, as a female tone of voice and I thought it might be fun to use the woman's again. Betsy: Is she in the Salt Lake City region? Graham: She is, yes. Betsy: I know you've talked about her, but I simply didn’ t know that she was. Graham: We also used another woman, a young girl, 19 years of age. Megan Olson is through Salt Lake. She in no way played, never sang on the record before And she sings on the song called Restless, that you simply haven’ t heard however. It’ s pretty awesome. Betsy: I almost have all the songs written down. I’ ve got Cause you to Mine, The Future, Ribbons and Leather, Let Your self Go, Save the Globe, This Time, Our Adore and Restless. Graham: The number of is that? Betsy: 8. Graham: What’ s lacking? Let Yourself Go, have you got that? Betsy: Yes, well obviously I have that 1! Graham: Of course you need to do, yeah. You got, Allow Yourself Go… Love Is actually Warm, you have which? Betsy: NoGraham: Love Is actually Warm? Betsy: Love Is actually Warm, yeah. Graham: 3rd is Lace and Leather-based, Our Love, Make a person Mine… Betsy: So This time around is the First Time… could it be called This Time? Graham: It’ s called This time around, yeah. Betsy: And that’ s on the website? That’ s nice, it’ utes lovely. Graham: Yeah, it’ s on the website, yeah. That was among the first I recorded really. it’ s This Period, Restless, oh Fall Along with you? Do you have which? Betsy: Fall With A person? Graham: So that’ utes 10, that’ s them all. Betsy: Do you possess a favorite? Graham: Well, I’ m very keen on Lace and Leather, you realize, and, but I love The near future too. Betsy: I love The near future. I mean, so I’ ve only heard 3 from the songs, no, actually I’ ve heard more simply because when you did a few of the songs at Fan Day… Graham: Within Laughlin. Betsy: And Used to do love Let Yourself Proceed. Graham: Yeah. Betsy: I must say I love which. Graham: I do as well. Betsy: But you singing The near future, I really love this. Graham: I love performing that too. So, did I play after that it? I can’ t keep in mind. Betsy: I don’ capital t know. You played 5 tunes in Laughlin but We don’ t know… Graham: We don’ t think We played that, I don’ capital t think I played itBetsy: We don’ t remember those they were. I recorded a couple little pieces in some places, but probably just a couple of seconds. Graham: No I don’ capital t think I played this. That’ s got Lewis Clark’ s string arrangement onto it, which is amazing. Betsy: That song? Graham: The Long term. He did The Long term and he did The Love. Did I perform Our Love? I do. Betsy: I think a person did. That sounds acquainted. Graham: Yeah. Yeah. He or she did the string agreement on that too. He’ utes amazing. He’ s the guy from ELO in the 70s, right. Betsy: Truly? Graham: Do you understand the Electric Light Band? Betsy: I’ ve heard about them, yeah. (laughing)Graham: Oh yea, they’ re fabulous. Betsy: I was created in ‘ 69 so I know a bit from the 70s. Graham: Oh yea, ok, right. Yeah, he’ s my personal favorite string arranger. I use him constantly. Yeah, he’ s excellent. Once again, he’ utes very sympathetic to my personal songs. I call him or her up and say, have you been available to do a good arrangement? And I’ lmost all send him the monitors, you know. But We don’ t send him or her any ideas or something. He’ ll listen towards the track and he’ lmost all call me up as well as say, I’ m prepared to do the arrangement. As well as he’ ll never state, what do you would like, or anything. And I’ lmost all say, you know how to proceed, right? And he states, oh yeah, I know how to proceed. Betsy: Really? Graham: Yes, and it’ s excellent. So I never listen to the arrangement til we’ re within the studio with the band. Betsy: So kind of the way you write for Russell, he arranges for you personally? Graham: Yeah. He just will it. Yeah. But he knows which i love ELO stuff. All of the da da da da da da da da da da da da da. I really like all that. Yeah, fantastic. Betsy: Yeah, I remember a number of their music from long ago... when. Graham: Oh, they’ lso are great, they’ re excellent. Betsy: So your preferred song then is? Graham: Nicely, you know, I can’ t really narrow it down because there are plenty of different textures and various... all the songs will vary. There’ s only truly one big ballad, that is Our Love. There’ utes Let Yourself Go, that is very upbeat, very techno. Betsy: Like it! Graham: Yeah, I perform too. Betsy: I heard that one and said I can't wait to get which CD! Graham: Yeah, it’ utes... I think you’ lmost all really dig it, you realize. But The Future personally, the song The Future is most likely my favorite. Betsy: I really like that one. You change what up a little in certain of your songs whenever you sing them live. Graham: Will i? Betsy: Yeah, a tiny bit. Graham: Oh. Make A person Mine, I got just a little lost in Make You Mine yesterday. Betsy: Yeah, well, personally, I’ m like, nicely, is he? Or is that actually the way it will go. I can’ t inform. But I did report in Vegas the tunes twice. Graham: Were these people different? Betsy: A tiny bit. Graham: Well, I began on February 14th starting. And it took me pretty much until recently to really nail what, which sounds strange simply because they’ re my tunes. But there’ s lots of words to remember, especially about the Future, there’ s lots of words to remember. Betsy: It’ utes so beautiful. Graham: Many thanks. Betsy: And, it will get great compliments from individuals. Graham: Oh does this? See I don’ capital t hear them. Continued
