I find it curious that a lot of journalists provoking discussion and discussion about some profound error of judgment for a high-flying corporate executive or football player speculate how the decision maker in question had been intellectually challenged (aka "stupid"). Given that lots of footballers and business tycoons upon six or seven-figure salaries adhere to the share market, is it possible that this type of person not simply stupid or flamboyant but instead supremely arrogant or out associated with touch with community reality? The savior in individual scandals is they and their families experience the largest impact. Not so, with HIH investors. I find it equally interested and almost amusing that others will discuss these people and muse authoritively about footballers' apparent insufficient discipline. I see.... Yes, exactly the same people who monitor their intake of food for nutritional quality seven days per week for 10 months of the entire year, run umpteen times
a 7 days, crash through pain and mental anguish testing out the Kokoda trail for something to complete, spend hours almost daily inside a gym, turn up to training promptly, attend media appearances, visit private hospitals, choose words carefully in publish match media interviews and enter Port Phillip Bay at 0830 hours on the freezing winter morning in a skimpy set of bathers for a post match recovery session simply because someone else at the Club thought it was advisable. Sounds pretty disciplined to me personally! Now you could say, and also you might, that it's precisely because they need to be so disciplined on another stuff that they're tempted sometimes to freak out and drive the boundaries. But is it possible you will find other factors at play, and at the office? When the Wayne Carey/Anthony Stevens turmoil hit North Melbourne, Ricky Nixon, Carey's supervisor and Carey's hapless wife, Sally, both commented publicly on the feeling that community reverence, dizzying
success and power and Carey's insufficient experience at being told "No" had been key to what they thought to be his ruination. Sally Carey blamed herself yet others in Carey's inner circle with regard to cultivating a rarefied sense associated with entitlement that gave rise in order to poor decisions, failure to think about consequences and difficulty taking obligation by her husband for their actions. Simone Warne and Victoria Beckham didn't, to my knowledge, come out publicly and say a similar thing. They just forgave Shane and David (respectively) for this. What they did appear to become saying was that their husbands had/has what we should call in psychology, poor behavioral instinct control or low frustration threshold. So they were prepared to become open minded on lots associated with things but supposedly demanded they never hire a lady nanny unless she looked such as Mrs Doubtfire (my extra, not really Simone or Posh's)! What are a few of the qualities we demand
in top notch performers - whether athletes or even corporate executives? Surely to be successful they need to be supremely self-confident, somewhat self- soaked up, disciplined, single minded, goal focused, bold, perfectionistic and faced having a ferocious tackle by the competitors - unyielding. As a much talked about commodity, when they are not about the field or in the panel room, they may enjoy cult status or Club membership celebrity, are dressed impeccably (even sponsored) through suit manufacturers, may dwell on the appearance, and surround themselves along with beautiful things and beautiful individuals. Hogan and Kaiser in their own fascinating 2006 report entitled The actual Dark Side of Discretion describe a taxonomy from the 'dark side of leader personality'. Situational talents like energy, enthusiasm even enthusiasm, can be channelled when below stress into emotional explosiveness. Might that help explain the brawls outdoors pubs? One person's discipline and u
ndistracted focus might be another's obsessoid personality. One manager's unswerving self-belief in the pointy end of the size is another's narcissistic sense associated with callous entitlement. A characteristic for example being tough and resolute pressurized may translate into uncommunicative conduct in relationships, and insensitivity in order to moral issues. The darker aspect of courage, confidence and charisma might be reflected in an inability to admit mistakes or study from experience. It is well documented that Ben Cousins' go back to Australia does not seem to possess curbed his appetite for dance clubs and partying; nor does he appear to have felt a pressure to handle peoples' perceptions of him while he seeks permission for any return from exile. None of those 'dark side' attributes connote psychological illness; rather flawed interpersonal strategies that within the extreme can become pervasive long-term weak points.
